Trauma Support

What is Trauma?

Trauma is the emotional and physiological response to an experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. It’s not just about what happened—it’s about how the event was experienced and how it continues to live in the body and mind. Trauma can stem from a single event, such as an accident or loss, or from ongoing experiences like abuse, neglect, or chronic stress. It can lead to feelings of fear, shame, helplessness, and disconnection. Healing involves helping the nervous system feel safe again, processing painful memories, and rebuilding trust in oneself and others.

Symptoms of Trauma

Trauma-related symptoms are primarily outlined under Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These symptoms appear after exposure to a traumatic event—directly, as a witness, by learning about it happening to someone close, or through repeated exposure to details of trauma (such as first responders). The DSM groups PTSD symptoms into four main categories: intrusion, avoidance, negative changes in thoughts and mood, and changes in arousal and reactivity.

Treatment Options

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): Helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional intensity.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Combines education, coping skills, and gradual exposure to help clients manage trauma-related thoughts and emotions.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): Focuses on challenging unhelpful beliefs and guilt connected to the trauma.
